"Eco-Efficiency Biennial a 100% zero emission event including the 'Formula Zero Gran Prix Torino'
AMSTERDAM / TURIN, 22 September 2009 - In the framework of the Eco-Efficiency Biennial organized by Environment Park and supported by Piedmont Region, the Valentino Park (Turin, Italy) will host Formula Zero's next Grand Prix powered by hydrogen fuel cell technology. It means that zero emission racing will hit Italian sole for the first time. Four top European universities will battle for 0th place during the weekend of 10 – 11 October."
The teams designed and built their own zero emission racers. Formula Zero takes this innovative, dynamic championship to cities around the world, bringing zero emission technology into the public eye. After a successful launch in the city of Rotterdam, The Netherlands in 2008, the four European teams battled in each of the teams home country this summer. The Belgian Umicore Zero Emission Racing Team from Group-T, Leuven, succeeded in winning three out of four Grands Prix. All teams will now show Italy that zero emission racing is fun and exciting to watch during the races of the ‘Turin FZ-GP’.
“Showing sustainable technology through a racing competition by young enthusiastic students shows the feasibility of a future with hydrogen-electric mobility in the most appealing way”, says Formula Zero Racing Director Eelco Rietveld. “Learning by doing and use all your creativity to win a race, is just the spirit we need for the next generation of engineers as well entrepreneurs to establish the transition to a worldwide CO2 free energy supply.”
"The Formula Zero race assumes an added value in Turin, where past meets the future of car technology", says Environment Park CEO Alessandro Battaglino. "Turin is the city where car industry was born more than a century ago and where now applied research on hydrogen technologies and zero emission cars is developing fast."
Eco-Efficiency Biennial 2009
The Eco-Efficiency Biennial of 2009 (EEB’09) will relaunch the event on an international scale in a new format and in a different location. It will be held at the Torino Esposizioni facilities, an historical complex in the Valentino Park, the green heart of the city. The event will frame activities with the aim of spreading out scientific knowledge, information, environmental education and entertainment for the citizens and for the younger population.
It will be a zero-emission event. In other words, the environmental impact of the Eco- Efficiency Biennial 2009 will be “measured” to identify and plan actions aimed at greenhouse gas effect compensation. EEB 2009 will also be the opportunity for a first assessment of the policies implemented by the Region of Piedmont with a view to reducing energy consumption, the so-called 20-20-20 targets – the aim of these policies is to reach 20% energy production from renewable sources, 20% energy saving and 20% CO2 reduction by 2020.
Side events and conferences
“The Meetings of Eco-Efficiency” will provide the opportunity to check the progress made in the key areas of eco-efficiency and energy. The section will feature scientific congresses as well as political and strategic events like UNEP on sustainable cities or the World Political Forum on Energy organized in the framework of Uniamo le Energie.
Environment Park
Environment Park was founded in 1996 thanks to the initiative of Regione Piemonte, Provincia di Torino, Città di Torino and the European Union, and represents an original experience in the European Scientific and Technological Park scene, due to having been able to conjugate technological innovation and Eco-efficiency, hosting within its structures specialized firms and research agencies in those two sectors of intense growth.
Formula Zero
Formula Zero was founded in 2003 and promotes well to wheel zero emission technology through motorsport. Formula Zero is a new zero-emission race class for cutting edge open single seaters. Zero emission racing is the perfect platform for researching and marketing the advanced propulsion technologies of this century such as fuel cells and batteries. Formula Zero appeals to a new generation of race fans by promising unexpected technological innovations, racing on challenging locations, zero emissions and a futuristic sound. This race class will scale-up to full-size racing cars, as commercial interest and the technology are developing at a rapid pace. One rule stands; all cars will produce zero emissions.
